Setup & Considerations
Recording Environment
When recording audio, it's best to work in the quietest room possible to prevent background noise or reflection. Your environment also matters. A bathroom may be more private, but a tiled wall can create a boomy, reflective sound. The duller the walls and the area around you, the clearer the sound you can achieve. This is the idea behind professional recording booths.
Microphones & Headphones
Voloco is designed to work with your iOS or Android device's built-in mics and speakers. The app can also accommodate a wide variety of headphones and external microphones, from the headset and mic that came with your smartphone to professional-grade microphones.
Make sure any external microphone is compatible with your smartphone and connected before opening Voloco. If you have a professional stand-alone mic, you will need an audio interface compatible with your device to connect the mic on one end and your device on the other. There are a range of audio interfaces available that are compatible with both iOS and Android devices.
For the best audio quality, use at least a headset and mic, such as the headphones that came with your smartphone. Using headphones lets you hear the backing track and your vocal monitor, which is your voice through Voloco's effects, while you record.
You can also record without headphones. Voloco cancels the backing track from your recording automatically, so your Beat doesn't bleed into your vocal take. Turn your device volume down when you do, which Voloco will remind you about on screen. Headphones still give a cleaner result, but they're no longer required.
When using a headset with a built-in mic, hold the microphone near mouth level rather than letting it dangle below your head. This position captures the sibilance of your voice, the higher frequency sounds such as the "S" and "T" sounds your mouth naturally makes when singing or speaking.
Don't hold the mic too close, though. Placing it directly in front of your mouth can result in blown-out, distorted audio. Roughly 6 inches (15 cm) from your mouth is a good balance.
Bluetooth
Many people use Bluetooth headphones for the convenience of a wireless connection, and most Bluetooth headsets have a built-in microphone.
Bluetooth comes with a trade-off. Because it transmits a lot of information wirelessly, there can be a delay, called latency, between the backing track and your recorded vocals. You may also hear latency in your vocal monitoring, because of the time it takes to transmit the audio plus the time Voloco takes to process it.
When possible, use wired headphones or microphones to reduce latency and keep your vocals on top of the Beat.
If you do use a Bluetooth headset, Voloco records from your device's built-in microphone rather than the microphone in the headset. This eliminates latency and prevents out-of-time recording, and it produces a higher-quality recording.
Tip
Turn off Vocal Monitoring when using wireless headphones. Hearing your own vocals on a delay can be jarring and affect your take.
Time Shift
Time Shift corrects for audio delay by moving your recorded audio in time to match the backing track.
Voloco estimates the latency of your current setup and sets Time Shift to match. There are separate values for wired and speaker connections and for Bluetooth connections, since the delay is different for each.
To see or change them, open Project Settings and tap Default Time Shift. The value here applies to all new recordings. You can also adjust an individual Segment after recording by tapping it in Edit View and tapping Time Shift.
If you aren't hearing any delay in your recordings, there's no need to change anything.
Latency Test
If the estimate isn't right for your setup, you can measure it yourself.
- Open Project Settings, tap Default Time Shift, then tap Estimated Current Latency for the connection you want to measure.
- Tap to start. You'll hear a metronome click.
- Tap the screen with your fingernail in time with the click. Your fingernail makes a sharper sound than a fingertip, which helps Voloco measure accurately.
- Voloco shows the measured latency and applies it.
Voloco Workflow
Voloco uses a series of views to prepare, record, edit and review your Track. They appear in this order:
Home and Beats, then Performance, then Edit, then Review and Publish.

EQ
EQ, or equalizer, works by lowering or amplifying certain frequencies of a sound, whether high, low, or mid-range, to create a color or overall tone. Use EQ to make your voice brighter or warmer, or to cut out problem frequencies.
The EQ panel shows a live spectrum: the gray shape is your voice as it comes in, and the blue line is the curve being applied to it.
- Mid-range scoop
A widely used effect that lowers the mid-range, creating a combination of crisp highs and deep lows.
- Brightness
Adds a sheen to high-end sounds, including the sibilance of consonant sounds.
- Low and high boost
Similar to mid-range scoop, but works by turning up the low and high range rather than cutting the middle.
- Vocal clarity
Accentuates notable frequencies in the vocal range for clear, up-front vocals.
- Telephone
Cuts the low and high end, leaving the middle for a canned, phone-like sound.
Corrective EQ
Corrective EQ analyzes what your room and your microphone did to your voice, and corrects for it automatically. Room resonance and microphone character are the usual reasons a home recording sounds amateur. Knowing which frequencies to fix normally takes trained ears.
Think of it as autocorrect for your recording space. It leaves your creative decisions alone and cleans up the coloration your walls and your microphone added without anyone choosing it.
Corrective EQ runs on a recorded vocal, so it's reached from a Segment in Edit View rather than from Performance View:
- Switch to Edit View
- Tap the vocal Segment you want to work on
- Select EQ from the Segment menu
- Tap Corrective EQ at the top of the panel
- Adjust the Amount slider
The spectrum shows your input as a gray shape and the correction as a blue line. Amount controls how far the correction goes, from a light touch to the full correction.
Corrective EQ and Manual EQ are not alternatives. Corrective EQ runs early and automatically, on the raw vocal before any effects. Manual EQ comes later and is where you shape tone by hand. Neither replaces the other.
Manual EQ
Tap Custom in the EQ panel, then Manual EQ, to set each band yourself.
- CUT
A high-pass filter. Frequencies above this point are preserved, everything below is filtered out. Use this to remove unnecessary low end from your voice.
- 200 through 8k
Sculpt each frequency range. Start with a preset to get a sense of how EQ affects your sound, then build from there.
- SHELF
Increases the gain of the high frequencies overall. Boost for a crisp high end, lower for a more muted tone.
- Reset to Flat
Returns every band to zero.
Compressor
One of the most widely used audio effects. Compression reduces the dynamic range of a signal, the difference between loud and quiet, which lets it sound heavier, clearer and more powerful.
- Rap
All-around vocal compression to add definition to rhythm.
- Pop
Adds depth to the low-middle range with a crisp high end.
- Moderate
A more subtle effect, compatible with most vocals.
- Parallel compression
Mixes the compressed signal with your original uncompressed signal for a lighter effect. Adds clarity and dynamics while keeping the volume boost and punch of compression.
- Blasted
Intense compression. Loud and clear, with less dynamics. Useful for heavy tracks, but can be overbearing on a softer one.
Custom Compressor
Tap the sliders icon in the Compressor panel to set the parameters yourself. Requires Voloco Premium.
- Gain Reduction
A live view of how much reduction is currently being applied, in decibels.
- Mix
The ratio of dry, uncompressed sound to wet, compressed sound. A blend of the two is also called parallel compression.
- Input Gain
Increases the volume going into the Compressor. Boost this for a more aggressive sound.
- Output Gain
Increases the volume coming out. Boost this to bring your vocals back to a listenable level if compression is reducing them too much, or lower it if they're too loud.
- Attack
How quickly, in milliseconds, the Compressor engages once the threshold is met. A faster Attack sounds more aggressive, a slower one more transparent.
- Release
How quickly the Compressor stops once the input falls below the threshold. A faster Release sounds more aggressive, a slower one more transparent.
- Ratio
How much compression is applied once the threshold is met. A higher Ratio means a more compressed sound.
- Auto Threshold / Threshold
The input level at which the Compressor engages. A lower Threshold means a more compressed sound. If you aren't getting enough compression, lowering the Threshold or raising the Input Gain will help. Auto Threshold finds the ideal value for you.
Echo
Echo adds delay to your audio to evoke space or add a rhythmic effect. Echo speeds are linked to your Project's tempo.
- Right to left
Stereo delay that bounces back and forth.
- 8th note bounce
Fast 8th note delay to accentuate fast vocal runs.
- Resonant buzz
Also known as slapback delay. Really fast.
- Slinky
Moderately fast delay with a long decay for a spacious sound.
- Coin drop
Fast stereo delay with a louder presence in the mix.
Custom Echo
Tap the sliders icon in the Echo panel to set the parameters yourself. Requires Voloco Premium.
- Duck Delay
Also known as sidechain compression. Turns down the volume of your delay trail underneath your dry vocals. Useful for a cleaner mix and a subtler Echo.
- Tempo Sync
Switches the time-based controls below between free millisecond values and beat divisions synced to your Project's tempo.
Left Delay and Right Delay How long before the Echo engages on each stereo channel, in milliseconds or beat divisions.
Left Feedback and Right Feedback How much of each channel is fed back into itself. Higher values create more echoes over a longer time.
- X-over Feedback
How much each channel is fed into the opposite one. Use this to create a ping-pong effect.
- Dry Level
The volume of your unaffected vocal. Raise this for a subtler Echo.
- Wet Level
The volume of the Echo chain. Raise this for a more prominent Echo.
Reverb
Reverb creates the sound of a space for your vocals to sit in, whether large or small.
- Stereo width
A wide reverb effect, best heard in headphones.
The rest evoke spaces described by their names: Large hall, Small club, Long and narrow, Cathedral, and Medium room.
Custom Reverb
Tap the sliders icon in the Reverb panel to set the parameters yourself. Requires Voloco Premium.
- Mix
The ratio of wet to dry signal. The higher the Mix, the louder the Reverb.
- Width
How much the Reverb tail bleeds into the left and right sides of the stereo field.
- Damp
Dampens the Reverb tail and adjusts how long it rings out.
- Room Size
The size of the artificial room the Reverb exists in. A larger room adds more reflections and density.
- Pre-Delay
How long before the Reverb tail begins, in milliseconds. A longer Pre-Delay can add clarity to your mixdown and make your dry signal stand out more.
Presets
You can group FX, Compressor, EQ, Echo and Reverb settings into a custom Preset and recall it anywhere in Voloco.
Tap the Preset row in Live Vocals view to expand the Preset drawer.
Tapping a saved Preset loads it, updating all five effects at once. Tap Save As to save your current settings as a new Preset. Tap ... on a saved Preset to rename or delete it.
Tip
When a Preset is loaded and you change any effect, it renames to "[Preset Name] (edited)". If you save those changes to the Preset, every Segment in your Project using that Preset updates to match. If you save them as a new Preset instead, only the current Segment changes.
Note
Segment panning and Segment volume are not saved in a Preset.
About Keys & Scales
Almost all Western music is in a particular key. When you hear someone say "in the key of D," that means the pitch D sounds like the home sound, the most stable note in the key. This stable, home note is sometimes called the tonic.
There are 12 notes in most Western music.
Scales are a collection of notes in a certain key that evoke a certain sound or emotion. Generally speaking, most people hear major keys as happy or bright, and minor keys as sad or dark. Scales are chosen by the way the notes relate to one another, and you can have the same kind of scale in a different key. C minor and D minor both evoke that same sad sound, but have different home notes.
Try experimenting with the different scales in Voloco to discover what feeling each one evokes for your Track.
Keys & Scales
Open Project Settings and tap Key & Scale.
- Automatic
When this is on, Voloco detects the Key and Scale of your Backing Track and sets them for you. Turn it off to choose yourself.
Key selects the tonal center of your Track from the 12-note scale. Scale selects which notes Voloco will move your voice to. Voloco takes your audio input and moves it to the closest note in your selected Key and Scale, in real time.
- Major
One of the most commonly used scales in Western music. A generically happy, warm tone. Major third, major 7th.
- Minor
Also one of the most commonly used. A generically sad, cold, serious tone. Minor third, minor 6th, minor 7th.
- Harmonic Minor
The same as Minor, but with a major 7th. Associated with a spooky mood in popular culture.
- Whole Tone
Each note is a whole step above the last. This produces a classic horror or fantasy sound.
- Just Intonation
Uses a series of whole-number ratios to create a scale, rather than dividing an octave into 12 equal notes. Useful if your backing track is tuned in just intonation, sometimes called pure intonation.
- Major Pentatonic
One of the most commonly used scales globally. A five-note scale consisting of a tonic, a major 2nd, a major 3rd, a 5th and a major 6th.
- Minor Pentatonic
Similar, with a minor 3rd. Also very common globally, and close to the blues scale with a few fewer notes.
- Blues
Similar to the minor pentatonic, with a distinctive sharp 4th between the 4th and 5th that gives it the bluesy tone.
- Chromatic
Every note in the 12-note system. Corrects your audio to the closest note without giving the scale any particular color.
Pitch Correction vs. Vocoder
Voloco's effect presets use one of two types of vocal processing: pitch correction and vocoder effects.
Pitch correction works by detecting the incoming pitch of your vocals, then calculating the closest desired pitch within a specified key or scale. Pitch correction was used sparingly in high-end studios until 1997, when it became widely available thanks to improvements in mathematical signal processing. These effects give a more modern sound, common in contemporary hip-hop, R&B and pop.
The vocoder sound dates back much further, to the late 1920s, and consists of multiple channels of information processed in real time. Vocoders capture the vocal characteristics of the voice: the formant, or tone, the sibilance, and the pitch. These are then applied to a carrier signal, which in Voloco's vocoder presets is a synthesizer tone. This allows a musical tone, such as a synth, guitar or violin, to take on vocal characteristics and talk.
Vocoders were very popular in the 1970s and 1980s and can be heard in countless funk, boogie, experimental and krautrock recordings, as well as in house, techno and trance from the 1990s onwards.
Experimenting with both types is the fastest way to find the right tone for your Track.
Loop Zone
Loop Zone repeats a section of your Project so you can work on one part without restarting each time.
Double tap the timeline ruler to add a Loop Zone, then drag its start and end to set what gets looped. The looped range is highlighted, and playback and recording stay inside it until you clear it.
Useful for getting a hook right, or for layering several takes over the same few bars.
Lyrics Pad
Tap the pencil icon at the top of the screen to open the Lyrics Pad. Your lyrics stay available while you record.
Lyrics are saved by title. The next time you open the Lyrics Pad, a list of your saved lyrics appears. Tap + to create a new set, or tap ... next to an existing one to share or delete it.
You can write lyrics yourself, or use the Auto Lyrics option, which generates lyrics using AI from a prompt. Note that generated lyrics are experimental.
Tip
Lyrics saved here can be used to caption a video. See Sharing Clips to Social Media.
Editing
Editing is where you refine your mix and effects, manipulate Segments, or crop your Track. Tap the Edit View toggle at the top of the screen, the waveform icon to the right, to enter Edit View.
Tapping any audio channel selects it for recording, and the selected channel is highlighted.
If you record over part of an existing Segment, the new Segment overwrites the existing one ahead of the playhead. Add a new Vocal channel to preserve both.

Leave the Project and return to your Library.
- 2. Layers
Tap to select a Vocal channel for recording. Tap the cassette or Beat icon to open the Vocal channel menu.
- 3. Add Layer
Add another Vocal channel.

Drag anywhere on the timeline to scrub through your Track.
Editing Segments
You can move and trim Segments, or change the volume, panning, Compressor, EQ, Reverb and effect on each individual Segment, even within one audio channel.
Tap a Segment to select it. Press and hold to drag it along the timeline, or drag the endpoints to trim it.
- FX & Volume
Show the effect and volume controls for this Segment.
- Time Shift
Push this Segment backwards or forwards in time to adjust for latency or a delayed performance. See Time Shift.
- Fade
Fade the Segment in and out. See Fade.
- Copy
Copy the Segment. Scrub to where you want it, tap the cursor, then tap Paste.
- Split
Split the Segment at the cursor. Use this to move part of a Segment, or to change effects in the middle of a take. Split only appears when the playhead is inside the Segment.
- Denoise Voice
Remove background noise from this Segment. See Denoise Voice.
- Remove
Delete this Segment without deleting the Track.
Note
Segment volume and track volume are independent. Track volume is applied after Segment volume in the mixdown.
Fade
Fade smooths the start and end of a Segment so it doesn't begin or stop abruptly.
Tap Fade in the Segment menu, then set In and Out in milliseconds. Tap Done.
Denoise Voice
Denoise Voice removes background noise from a recorded Segment, isolating your voice.
Tap Denoise Voice in the Segment menu. Processing takes a moment and can be canceled.
Once a Segment has been processed, the menu item reads Denoised and is grayed out, so you can tell at a glance which Segments have already been cleaned up. Tap Undo to revert it.
Working with tracks
Tap the cassette or Beat icon beside any lane to open the Vocal channel menu.
- Mute
Silence this track. Its icon changes to a crossed-out speaker and its waveform dims.
- Solo
Play only this track. A blue S appears beside it. More than one track can be soloed at a time.
- Rename
Give the track a name, such as Hook or Adlibs, instead of Vocals 1.
- FX & Volume
Open the effect and volume controls for the whole track.
- Remove
Delete the track and everything on it.
Crop
- Tap the Crop button in Edit View.
- Drag the Start and End sliders to pick the beginning and end of your Track. Crop affects the entire Project, including all audio tracks.
- Tap Crop again to commit.
The cropped-out section stays on screen grayed out, and won't be played or exported when you save. You can change or remove the crop later.
Pinch to zoom on the waveform while cropping for finer control. The strip along the bottom shows the whole Project, with a window you can drag to move around it.
Mix
Control the recording and monitoring levels of your audio. A colored meter shows input volume, turning red if the input is peaking.
- Auto Mix
Balance your vocal tracks against your Beat in one tap. See Auto Mix.
- Live
Your vocal monitor. Disabled when no headphones are connected. Note that when you adjust this level, any newly recorded Segment is automatically set to that level.
- Vocals
Control the volume of each Vocal channel. This is independent of Segment volume, and the two are summed in your mix.
- Backing Track
The volume of your Beat in monitoring and recording.
Tap the icon of any channel to mute it or open its FX & Volume controls.
Auto Mix
Auto Mix balances your vocal tracks against your Beat, preparing them for mastering.
Tap Apply at the top of the Mix view. The faders move to their new positions, and you can adjust any of them afterwards or undo the whole thing.
Available to everyone, with or without Voloco Premium.
Review
The Review view appears once you tap Continue after a Quick Record, or the pink arrow after recording in a Project.
When you enter Review, your audio is flattened into a single track for exporting.
Tip
To export only your vocal layers without your Beat, mute the Beat before exporting. This is useful if you plan to edit your vocals later in a DAW. You can repeat this to export single tracks, or just your backing track.
- 1. Artwork
Tap to add artwork from your camera roll or take a photo. You'll crop it to a square. Use high-resolution, clear artwork with no copyrighted material.
- 2. Name
Tap to edit. This name is saved in your Library and used for any exported files. By default Voloco names your Track after the effect you used, for example Natural Tune C Major.
- 3. Mastering
Apply Auto Mastering to your finished Track. See Auto Mastering.
- 4. Waveform
Listen back, see the waveform and scrub through your audio.
- 5. Share

Auto Mastering
Mastering is the last step before you share a Track. It sets the overall loudness and balance so your music holds up next to commercially released music.
Auto Mastering optimizes loudness, clarity, and balance with just one tap.
Tap Mastering in the Review view. Your Track starts on Original, which is no mastering at all.
Pick a preset, listen back using the player at the bottom, then tap Apply. Tap Reset to return to Original.

Custom Reference Track
Instead of picking a preset, you can point Voloco at a song you want yours to sound like.
Tap the + on the Custom Reference Track tile and choose an audio file. Voloco analyzes it and matches your Track to it.
Warning
Make sure to select a commercially mastered track. The reference track you select should already be mastered. If it is not, you will get poor results.
Once chosen, the tile reads Imported. Tap the minus to remove it and go back to the presets.

Sharing Clips to Social Media
You can share your music in two ways: a 15-second clip from a published Track, or a full-length video of any Project.
Sharing a 15-second clip
Tap the ... next to your published Track on your Profile, then tap Share.
Use the scrubber to choose which 15 seconds to share. The preview shows what your clip will look like: your artwork, the Track name and your username.
Tap Continue, then choose where to send it. The list comes from the apps installed on your device, so anything that accepts a video will appear.
Downloading a full-length video
Tap the three dots next to the Project in your Library, then tap Download as Video.
You can also reach this from the share icon in the Review view, or from the Publish screen.
- Project Name

Cloud Backups
Cloud backups keep a copy of your Projects online, so you can restore them if you lose your device or reinstall Voloco.
Auto Backup never runs while you're recording or in Performance View, so it can't interfere with a take.
Each Track in your Library shows its backup state:
| Icon | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cloud with a checkmark | The current version is backed up |
| Cloud with a slash | On your device, not backed up yet |
| Cloud, plain | A backup exists in the cloud. Either the Project isn't on this device, or the version here differs from the one in the cloud |
| Spinner | A backup or restore is in progress |
| Cloud with an exclamation mark | A backup or restore hit an error |
A failed backup retries automatically up to three times. If it keeps failing, check your connection and retry it from the Track menu.
Open Settings from the Library to manage backups.
- Backups Used
How many of your available backups you've used.
- Restore your backups
Browse your backed-up Projects and bring one back to this device.
- Auto Backup
Back up automatically as you work.
- Back up on Cellular
Allow backups over mobile data as well as Wi-Fi.
Note
Only Projects are backed up. Quick Recordings and Videos are not.
Warning
Restoring a backup replaces the version on your device. If you've made changes since the backup, they'll be lost.
Recovering unsaved work
If you leave Voloco without saving, Voloco keeps your Project and offers it back the next time you open the app.
You can also save before leaving by tapping the Back button in Performance View. Tapping Discard permanently deletes your recording.
Collaboration
You can collaborate with other Voloco users to complete your Project. Send your full session, with all vocals, Beats, FX and Segments, to let your collaborators add verses, mixdowns and more.
Sending a Project
To begin, tap the three dots next to the Project in your Library, then tap Collaborate.
Your Project uploads first, which can take a little time on a large session.
Copies a link you can send however you like, outside Voloco.
- Send as a Message
Search for a Voloco user and send the Project to them directly. Voloco confirms before sending: this duplicates your Project and sends the copy to your collaborator.
Receiving a Project
Your collaborator receives a Direct Message with a link. Tapping the link adds a copy of the Project to their Library.
They edit that copy, not your original, so nothing you send can overwrite the work you keep. You can go back and forth as many times as you like, each of you sending the edited Project back, until it's ready to publish.
Note
Collaboration is a Voloco Premium feature. If your collaborator does not have Voloco Premium, they will be prompted to subscribe before collaborating.
Importing
Want to use a beat that isn't on Voloco Beats? Voloco can import audio files from your device, and can separate vocals from instrumentals even in a flattened mix.
Importing a file
Tap the + icon, then Import. Choose audio from a video in your camera roll, from iTunes (iOS only), or from your Files.
Note
DRM-protected music in iTunes cannot be imported. To hide it from the list, turn on Hide DRM tracks in iTunes in Settings.
Once you've chosen a file, Voloco asks what to do with it.
- Import As-Is
This will import the entire audio file as a beat in a new project.
- Separate Vocals
This will isolate the vocal layer in your audio file and allow you to add vocal FX.
Your imported file appears as its own track, labeled with its filename.
Note
Without Voloco Premium, you can import one audio or video file per day. Premium removes the limit. Beats from Voloco Beats don't count toward it and are unlimited for everyone.
Separating vocals
Separation takes a little time. Voloco imports the file and splits it in two: the vocals land on their own track, and everything else becomes your Beat. Both open together in Edit View. While the tool is powerful, working with an original instrumental is always ideal, and you may hear digital artifacts in the result.
Using Voloco with BeatStars
Voloco has partnered with BeatStars, the world's most popular marketplace for buying and selling beats, so you can record over any Beat in the BeatStars library that allows free downloads.
Download the BeatStars app from the App Store or Play Store, browse for a beat, then tap Record to load the Beat into a new Project in Voloco. The Record button carries the Voloco logo, so it's easy to spot.
Voloco opens and imports the Beat, which takes a moment. The Beat then appears as its own track in your Project, labeled with its name, and its artwork replaces the Add Beat button.
Note
Beats loaded from BeatStars and from the Voloco Beats library are unlimited. The daily import limit applies only to audio and video files you import yourself. See Importing.
Licensing
Many free beats contain an audio watermark tag placed by the beatmaker, and you may still need to purchase a license through BeatStars if you plan to release your Track commercially.
You can buy a BeatStars license for many beats from within Voloco by tapping Buy License on the Beats page.
Uploading your own beats
BeatStars is the exclusive partner for Beats on the Voloco platform. To add your Beats to the directory, subscribe to BeatStars with a paid account, then upload your Beats to your BeatStars profile. A Voloco Artist page is generated automatically, and you can claim it to customize it and grow your fanbase.
Settings
Open Settings from your Library by tapping the gear icon.
Your Profile
A Voloco Profile lets you showcase your Tracks and Beats, and favorite other users' work.
Tap Sign In to Voloco to create a Profile or sign into an existing one with Google, Facebook, or Apple (iOS only).
Once signed in, tap your name at the top of Settings to view your Profile. Here you can see your published Tracks and Beats, and edit your profile picture, username and bio.
You can also sign in and edit your Profile at voloco.resonantcavity.com.
